How long has Lent been universally practiced?

With the legalization of Christianity in 313 A.D., Lent becomes a more universally, standardized observance. Why do we continue to practice this centuries later?

Although our culture, daily living and the world around us has changed drastically since 313 A.D. human nature has not. Human nature still has all the flaws it did back in 313. So we still observe Lent today because we still need Christ! We still need to strengthen our relationship with him today and every day.
