Has Lent always been 40 days?

Has Lent always been 40 days?

Although there are records of some form of Lenten season before Easter since the beginning of Christianity, the time period of Lent varied at the beginning of Christianity. The practices were also different in the East and the West. During the second century, Lent was only 40 hours long (between Good Friday and Easter) but the fast was intense - eating nothing for 40 hours.

Would you rather observe Lent how we do today or do what they did in the Second Century and eat nothing for 40 hours?
